The month of January brings us together and fills the nation with patriotic fervor. Every year India celebrates the Republic Day on 26th January to commemorate adoption of the Constitution. This year the country is witnessing its 62nd Republic Day.

The year 2010 was a landmark year of innovation and growth for india.gov.in. You might have already experienced the enhancement with news updates and rich content on National Portal of India.

The focus of Spotlight sections were on: Besides, our national events such as the Independence Day, Republic Day, Gandhi Jayanti and Children's Day too were highlighted. Thrust was also given to:-

Rural Indian

Villagers make the core of Indian society and represent real India. In order to ensure they are the real beneficiary of India's progress, the Government of India has identified several elements of socio, economic infrastructure which are critical to the quality of life in rural areas.

Importers & Exporters

The importance of foreign trade is more than ever before in today's globalised world. With the growth of Indian economy in the past two decades, imports and exports have gathered momentum and the Government of India is providing adequate policy framework, assistance and incentives to people, companies and organisations engaged in foreign trade.

Defence & Paramilitary Personnel

We brought to you detailed and up-to-date information on various measures taken by the Government of India, for welfare of the serving Defence and Paramilitary personnel as well as ex-servicemen and their dependents. They can avail detailed information on career opportunities, various programmes, policies, schemes, services and facilities available for them.

Other Updates

Web Ratna Awards: The Indian Government encourages the ICT-led development in the country. In order to promote more and more innovative e-governance initiatives and to give due recognition to the exemplary efforts in this direction, the Web Ratna Awards have been instituted under the ambit of the National Portal of India, india.gov.in.

The portal provided detailed information on the first ever Web Ratna Awards presented at the Vigyan Bhawan in New Delhi on the 19th of April, 2010.

Commonwealth Games, Delhi 2010: Delhi hosted the 19th Commonwealth Games in October 2010. It was the first big multi-sport event to be hosted by India in almost three decades. We showcased information about the main events and other traditions around the Games to keep people updated.

Know India: This section focuses on India's main features and achievements. New topics and updates based on India Book 2010 have been added to the Know India module.

States and Union Territories: The section introduces the 28 States and 7 Union Territories in the country and explores their magnificent uniqueness. New and up-to-date information has been compiled for Tripura and Orissa etc providing detailed information about the unique demography, history, culture, festivals, language, etc., of the states.

News Updates: As a part of our constant endeavour to keep you updated on all current affairs, we revamped our News platform. In addition to the news feeds of the Door Darshan , All India Radio and Press Information Bureau you can now avail all the news from different channels through a user-friendly interface just in one click. You will also get news updates from various states. Hence, bookmark india.gov.in as your most preferred destination for authentic national and international news.

  Right to Education

Our next spotlight is on the Right to Education Act. Education is a fundamental human right, which lays the foundation for development in the society. Towards this end, the Indian Parliament has enacted the Right to Education Act which provides for free and compulsory education to all children in the age group of six to 14 years. The Act notifies that it is a legally enforceable duty of the Centre and the States to provide free and compulsory education.
