Jharkhand DGP likely to get extension

Jharkhand Director General of Police Neyaz Ahmad is due to retire on November 30 this year

Ranchi: Move is afoot to grant a three-month service extension to Jharkhand Director General Police (DGP) Neyaz Ahmad. Ahmad, a 1973-batch Indian Police Service (IPS) officer, is set to retire on November 30.

Informed sources said that the state government has sent a letter to the Centre asking for Ahmad's extension for three months. Ahmad took over as the State DGP in January this year after the then Sibu Soren government removed Vishnu Dayal Ram from the post.

Ahmad will be the first police officer of the State to have an extended tenure. "The process of offering post-retirement service extension may take some time, as it required the nod of the Prime Minister under the laid down procedure," said a secretary level officer.

Presently, only Vishnu Dayal Ram, another 1973 batch officer, is in the rank of the DGP after Ahmad. As Ram has earned bad reputation for his alleged involvement in the secret service (SS) fund scam, handed over to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for probe, the state government is offering the post to him again.

Munda, sources said, wanted Ahmad to continue for a few more months particularly because of ongoing inquiries into various scams being probed by the State Vigilance Bureau. Ahmad is also heading vigilance bureau as its DG.

"Change of guard at this crucial juncture might affect the progress of investigation," said an officer.  The bureau has taken up investigation into various important cases including those pertaining to disproportionate assets cases against former chief minister Madhu Koda and other ministers like Enos Ekka and Kamlesh Kumar Singh and also those related to the Jharkhand Public Service Commission (JPSC).

On the other hand, Munda does not want to disturb the police set up at this juncture because he needed to be elected as an MLA to continue as the chief minister.
