Chandigarh gets serious on rainwater harvesting

Chandigarh: To rein in the increasing water shortage in the city, the Chandigarh Administration has decided to go for rainwater harvesting system. It has asked all houses and commercial complexes spread over one kanal and above to get a rainwater harvesting system in place by December 31, failing which they would be liable for strict action and in some cases plots and buildings would be attached.

It is talking tough on the account that though a notification in this regard was made on October 16, 2008, there has been a poor compliance rate. All existing buildings had to get the system installed within two years from the date of notification.

Besides, the administration has also appealed to owners of smaller plots to volunteer for rainwater harvesting system so that city’s water table could be replenished.

“Meeting the demand of water is increasingly becoming challenging. Therefore, simple measures like rainwater harvesting, ground water recharging, minimal wastage of water and unintended wastage could go a long way,” Finance Secretary Sanjay Kumar said.

“The city received a good rainfall this year and if we can tap this source in future, we will be able to meet the water deamand to a large extent. We are pretty serious about rainwater harvesting,” added Kumar.

The rainwater harvesting system has already been installed at State Judicial Academy, Entrepreneurship Development Centre building at IT Park, UT Guest House and Government College for Girls.

Work is under progress in seven other government buildings, including Deluxe Building, Paryavaran Bhawan, Governemnt colleges, Punjab and Haryana High Court, etc.

Estimates of about 60 different government buildings comprising all government colleges, 42 government schools, 11 police stations, one police line and public and government residential buildings are due for approval.
